Why do focal points matter, and what is a focal point?

The focal point should draw your eye into a space. A room can already have a built-in focal point such as:

  • A fireplace,

  • curved windows,

  • high ceilings, or

  • a ceiling rose

or you can create one.

A created focal point can be:

  • Artwork,

  • furniture,

  • Lighting, or

  • Feature wall

A focal point gives a room drama and can anchor the space.

By doing this, you are creating interest and allow an individual to leave with a lasting impression.

When designing your space, you should always know your focal point FIRST. The focal point typically stands out from the rest of the room. Selecting your focal point will allow you to design the space according to what you have chosen.

The focal point will help you decide what colours to use in the room, the texture of furniture items, and what scale the items in the room will need to ensure the space is cohesive.
